Original question
Esteemed Shaykh, does iman increase and decrease? We would like to know what brings about its increase and what brings about its decrease.
Answer
According to Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah, iman consists of acknowledgment in the heart, speech with the tongue and action with the limbs. It comprises these three things: acknowledgment in the heart, speech with the tongue and action with the limbs. Since this is so, it increases and decreases, because acknowledgment in the heart varies in strength. Accepting a report is not the same as accepting what one sees directly, and accepting the report of one man is not the same as accepting the report of two men, and so on.
This is why Ibrahim, upon him be prayers and peace, said, “My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.” Allah said, “Do you not believe?” He said, “Yes, but so that my heart may be reassured” [al-Baqarah 2:260]. Iman increases in the heart’s acknowledgment, reassurance and tranquillity. A person experiences this himself: when he attends a gathering of remembrance containing admonition and mention of Paradise and Hell, his iman increases until it is as though he sees them with his own eyes. When heedlessness returns and he leaves that gathering, this certainty in his heart weakens.
Iman also increases through speech. Someone who remembers Allah, Mighty and Majestic, ten times is not like someone who remembers Him a hundred times; the latter has increased much more.
Likewise, someone who performs worship completely has greater iman than someone who performs it incompletely. The same applies to deeds: when a person performs more deeds with his limbs than another, the one doing more has greater iman than the one whose deeds are deficient. This is established in the Book and Sunnah: the increase and decrease of iman are affirmed in both. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says, “We have appointed only angels as keepers of the Fire, and have made their number only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those given the Scripture may become certain and those who believe may increase in iman” [al-Muddaththir 74:31]. He also says, “Whenever a surah is sent down, some of them say, ‘Which of you has this increased in iman?’ As for those who believe, it increases them in iman and they rejoice. But as for those in whose hearts is a disease, it adds impurity to their impurity, and they die as disbelievers” [al-Tawbah 9:124–125]. In an authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said, “I have not seen anyone deficient in intellect and religious practice more capable of swaying the judgment of a resolute man than one of you.” Thus, iman increases and decreases.
But what causes iman to increase and decrease?
The causes of an increase in iman include the following:
The first cause is knowledge of Allah through His Names and Attributes. The more a person knows Allah and His Names and Attributes, the more his iman undoubtedly increases. This is why people of knowledge who know about Allah’s Names and Attributes what others do not know have stronger iman than others in this respect.
The second cause is examining Allah’s signs in creation and His revealed signs. The more a person examines the signs in creation—the heavens, the earth, human beings, animals and other created things—the more his iman increases. Allah says, “On the earth are signs for those who have certainty, and in yourselves; do you not see?” [al-Dhariyat 51:20–21]. Many verses indicate this: that a person’s reflection on and contemplation of this universe increase his iman.
The third cause is performing many acts of obedience. The more a person’s acts of obedience increase, the more his iman increases through them, whether those acts consist of speech or action. Remembrance increases iman in quantity and quality; prayer, fasting and Hajj likewise increase it in quantity and quality.
The causes of a decrease are the reverse. Ignorance of Allah’s Names and Attributes brings about a decrease in iman: someone who does not know Allah’s Names and Attributes lacks knowledge of the Names and Attributes through which iman increases.
The second cause is turning away from reflection on Allah’s signs in creation and His revealed signs. This causes iman to decrease, or at least to stagnate and cease growing.
The third cause is committing a sin. Sin has great effects on the heart and on iman. This is why the Prophet, upon him be prayers and peace, said, “A person who commits unlawful sexual intercourse does not do so while being a believer.”
The fourth cause is leaving an act of obedience. Leaving an act of obedience causes iman to decrease. If the act is obligatory and the person leaves it without an excuse, this is a deficiency for which he is blamed and punished. If the act is not obligatory, or it is obligatory but he leaves it for a valid excuse, this is a deficiency for which he is not blamed. This is why the Prophet ﷺ described women as deficient in intellect and religious practice, explaining the deficiency in religious practice by the fact that a menstruating woman neither prays nor fasts. She is not blamed for leaving prayer and fasting during menstruation; rather, she is commanded to do so. However, because she misses the act that a man performs, she has less than him in this particular respect.
