Original Q&A · Full displayed answer
The complete question concerns a colleague who pays two and a half percent immediately on every amount received. The whole answer explains the annual holding period, the exceptions for trade profit and offspring of grazing livestock, the worked trade example and a single annual calculation with advance payment for more recent salary savings.

Original question
A colleague of mine gives two and a half percent of every amount of money he receives as zakah, before spending any of it. Does this discharge the zakah that would be due on the money when a full year later passes over it? In fact, what he gives is much more, because he pays in advance on both the money he needs and the surplus.
Answer
Zakah becomes obligatory only when a full year has passed over the wealth. When the year is complete, a person totals what he possesses and pays its zakah. If it consists of trade goods or money, he pays one fortieth—two and a half percent—by dividing what he has by forty. A full year is the basic requirement for wealth on which zakah is obligatory, except for profit from trade: the profit does not itself have to be held for a full year. For example, if a person buys property for trade for ten thousand riyals, its value remains at that level, then after eleven months rises to fifteen thousand, he must pay zakah on fifteen thousand riyals even though only one month has passed over the profit. The year for trade profit follows the year of the original capital.
The same applies to the offspring of grazing livestock: if someone possesses grazing livestock and it produces offspring that affect the amount of zakah due, the offspring do not themselves have to be held for a full year. There is also an issue that confuses many people: those who receive their salaries gradually—how do they pay zakah? Some say, “If I calculate the zakah for each month separately, that is difficult, because keeping track of it is burdensome. What should I do?” We say that the best course is this: once a full year has passed from the first month in which you received your salary, pay zakah on everything you possess. For money that has completed its year, you have paid its zakah when due; for money that has not completed its year, you have paid its zakah in advance, and there is no harm in paying zakah in advance. This relieves you of the difficulty. Choose a particular month—the first month in which a full year has passed from your first salary—and whenever that month comes, pay zakah on what you possess. This frees you from keeping a separate calculation for each month.
