Original question
The questioner from Libya, Abdullah A. A., says: Esteemed Shaykh, what are the categories of tawhid, and must a person know them?
Answer
Tawhid has three categories: tawhid al-ilahiyyah (Allah’s oneness in worship), tawhid al-rububiyyah (His oneness in lordship), and tawhid of the Names and Attributes.
If the believer knows their meaning, even if he does not know the categories—if he affirms Allah’s oneness and believes that Allah is his Lord, his God and the One he truly worships, and that He possesses the most beautiful Names and the highest Attributes, with none like Him or equal to Him—that is sufficient, even if he does not know the categories. But knowing them is beneficial knowledge.
The first category is tawhid of lordship, which the polytheists acknowledged. It is for the servant to believe that Allah is the Creator and Provider, the One who created everything. He is the All-Knowing Creator: He created the earth, the heaven, the jinn, the children of Adam and everything. As He, exalted is He, says, ‘Allah is the Creator of everything’ [al-Rad 13:16]. The polytheists acknowledged this. Allah says, ‘If you ask them who created them, they will certainly say: Allah’ [al-Zukhruf 43:87]. And He says, ‘Say: Who…’
Meaning: say to the polytheists, ‘Who provides for you from heaven and earth? Who possesses hearing and sight? Who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living? Who directs affairs? They will say: Allah’ [Yunus 10:31].
That is, they acknowledge that Allah, their Lord, is the Creator and Provider, the One who gives life and causes death, who provides for them, glorified and exalted is He, and who directs affairs. They acknowledged this, but it did not bring them into Islam, because they did not fulfil the second kind of tawhid: tawhid of worship. This means singling out Allah for worship, which is the meaning of ‘There is no god but Allah’: none is truly worthy of worship except Allah. This is the meaning of His words in Surat al-Hajj, ‘That is because Allah is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood’ [al-Hajj 22:62]; His words, ‘They were commanded only to worship Allah, devoting the religion sincerely to Him, inclining to the truth’ [al-Bayyinah 98:5]; His words, ‘So worship Allah, devoting the religion sincerely to Him’ [al-Zumar 39:2]; His words, ‘Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him’ [al-Isra 17:23]; and His words, ‘You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help’ [al-Fatihah 1:5]. This is essential. It is what the polytheists rejected and denied, and disputed in opposition to; enmity and hostility arose between them and the messengers. Allah guided to it those whom He guided, for whom blessedness had already been decreed. It is belief that none is truly worthy of worship except Allah. That is the meaning of ‘There is no god but Allah’: none is truly worthy of worship except Allah.
He, majestic and exalted, says, ‘Your God is one God. There is no god but Him, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful’ [al-Baqarah 2:163]. He says, ‘Know that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sin’ [Muhammad 47:19]. He says of the polytheists, ‘When they were told: There is no god but Allah, they were arrogant, and would say: Are we to abandon our gods for a mad poet?’ [al-Saffat 37:35–36]. In Surat Sad, He relates that the disbelievers said, ‘Has he made the gods one God? This is indeed an astonishing thing’ [Sad 38:5].
The polytheists rejected this because they were accustomed to worshipping idols, the sun, the moon and the stars. Disbelievers are of different kinds. The Arab disbelievers were accustomed to worshipping idols, the dead, stones and trees. Allah says, ‘Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza, and Manat, the other, the third? Is the male for you and the female for Him? That would indeed be an unfair division. They are only names that you and your fathers have named, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow only conjecture and what their souls desire, although guidance has already come to them from their Lord’ [al-Najm 53:19–23].
Al-Lat was a righteous man who used to mix sawiq, a preparation of ground grain, for the pilgrims. He was kind to the pilgrims and prepared it for them. They worshipped him and the rock on which he used to prepare it. Al-Uzza was a tree between Taif and Makkah that they worshipped: Quraysh worshipped it and called upon it. There were jinn in it who confused them and spoke from within it. Manat was a rock near Qudayd on the road to Madinah, which the Ansar and others worshipped—al-Aws, al-Khazraj and others. Allah revealed what He revealed concerning it and brought its worship to an end.
When the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah and Allah granted him victory, there were three hundred and sixty idols around the Kabah. Among them was Hubal, which they revered. Abu Sufyan said concerning it on the day of Uhud, ‘Be exalted, Hubal!’ The Messenger ﷺ told them to say, ‘Allah is higher and more majestic.’ Abu Sufyan said, ‘We have al-Uzza, and you have no Uzza.’ On the day of Uhud, the Messenger ﷺ told them to say, ‘Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector.’
All these objects of worship which they worship besides Allah are false, whether trees, stones, the dead, celestial bodies or anything else. This is called tawhid al-ilahiyyah—singling out Allah in worship. It is the meaning of ‘There is no god but Allah’; it is what the polytheists denied, fought against and opposed in battle. The messengers brought it and called people to it. Allah says, ‘We certainly sent a messenger to every nation: Worship Allah and avoid false objects of worship’ [al-Nahl 16:36]. He says, ‘We sent no messenger before you without revealing to him: There is no god but Me, so worship Me’ [al-Anbiya 21:25].
Along with this tawhid, one must believe in the Messenger ﷺ and testify that he is Allah’s Messenger and the last of the prophets…
This is essential. One must also believe everything Allah and His Messenger have told us about what has happened and what will happen. Tawhid and faith are incomplete without this. That is, one must believe everything Allah and His Messenger have told us in the Quran or the authentic Sunnah about the Hereafter, Paradise and Hell, the reckoning and recompense, the Sirat and other matters. One must believe that Allah sent the messengers and revealed the books, as He explains in His magnificent Book: the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa. All of this is essential—that is, everything Allah and His Messenger have told us.
The third kind of tawhid is tawhid of the Names and Attributes. It is belief in everything Allah and His Messenger have told us about His Names and Attributes. One must believe this, and that He, exalted is He, possesses the most beautiful Names and the highest Attributes, with none like Him, equal to Him or a rival to Him. As He, mighty and exalted, says, ‘To Allah belong the most beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them’ [al-Araf 7:180]. He says—in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful—‘He is Allah, besides whom there is no god: the King, the Holy, the Source of Peace, the Granter of Security, the Guardian, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supremely Great. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah, the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner. To Him belong the most beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise’ [al-Hashr 59:23–24]. One must believe these Names and their meanings. He possesses the most beautiful Names and their meanings: He possesses mercy, knowledge, power, might and forbearance.
The Names have meanings:
Al-Rahman conveys mercy.
Al-Ilah means that He is the God of creation and the One they worship.
Al-Aziz means the Almighty who cannot be overcome; rather, He has overcome everything.
Al-Rahim is the One who possesses vast mercy, glorified and exalted is He.
Al-Hakim is the One who possesses wisdom. He does nothing in vain or without purpose. Rather, everything is according to wisdom, without futility.
Likewise, He is al-Alim, the One who knows everything, from whom nothing is hidden, glorified and exalted is He; and so on. These are the three categories of tawhid.
