English translation

Selected explanation

His statement, “There is no deity except You,” affirms that He alone possesses divinity. Divinity includes the perfection of His knowledge, power, mercy, and wisdom, so it affirms His goodness toward His servants. The ilāh is the maʾlūh [the one worshipped], and the maʾlūh is the One who deserves to be worshipped. His deserving to be worshipped is because of the attributes He possesses, which require that He be loved with the utmost love and submitted to with the utmost submission. Worship includes the utmost love together with the utmost humility.
