Original question

May an ill person who cannot stand pray while sitting?

Answer

An ill person may pray sitting when standing is difficult. In the authentic report from Imran ibn Husayn, when he complained of illness, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Pray standing; if you cannot, then sitting; if you cannot, then on your side; if you cannot, then lying on your back.” This is part of Allah’s easing and facilitation.

An ill man or woman for whom standing is difficult prays sitting. If severe illness prevents sitting, the person prays on the side, preferably the right side. If that is difficult, the person lies on the back with the feet towards the qiblah, facing it with the face. Similarly, someone unable to stand because of paralysis prays sitting, facing the qiblah, prostrates on the ground and bows by inclining the body. If unable to prostrate on the ground, the person inclines for prostration, making it lower than the inclination for bowing. Allah, Glorious and Exalted, says: “Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity” [al-Baqarah 2:286], and: “Fear Allah as much as you are able” [al-Taghabun 64:16]. End quote.

Allah is the One who grants success.
