Original Q&A · Full displayed answer

Preserve the distinction between seeking pardon when possible and the stated exceptions, including feared further harm. Praising the person means mentioning good qualities actually known. References to retribution describe lawful rights and do not authorize private punishment.

Original question

Her final question is: I used to backbite people, but now I have stopped, praise be to Allah. Will Allah accept my repentance?

Answer

Yes. Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents. When someone sincerely repents, regretting the past, leaving the sin and firmly resolving not to return to it, Allah accepts his repentance. He says: “Repent to Allah, all of you believers, so that you may succeed” [al-Nur 24:31], and: “O you who believe, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow” [al-Tahrim 66:8].

However, repenting concerning a Muslim’s right requires giving him his right. If it is money, return it; if it concerns blood, enable lawful retribution; if it concerns his honour, seek his pardon, saying: “My brother, forgive me; I spoke against your honour. Pardon me.” If this is not possible because the person has died, is far away and cannot be met or written to, or because informing him may cause turmoil and harm, then seeking forgiveness, regret and sincere repentance suffice, together with speaking well of him in the gatherings where he was backbitten. Mention the good qualities you know of him instead of the evil previously mentioned, so that this replaces that. As his blameworthy qualities were previously mentioned, mention his good qualities that you actually know. This applies when seeking his pardon is not possible because of feared turmoil. Pray for him and seek forgiveness for him. Allah, Glorious and Exalted, accepts the repentance of those who repent. Yes.
