Original question

Esteemed Shaykh, does the testimony encompass the categories of Tawhid?

Answer

It encompasses all categories of Tawhid, either by inclusion or by necessary implication. When someone says, “I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah,” the immediately understood meaning is singling out Allah in worship. Singling out Allah in worship, called Tawhid of divinity, necessarily implies—indeed, includes—Tawhid of Lordship. Whoever worships Allah alone will only worship Him while acknowledging His Lordship. It also includes Tawhid of the Names and Attributes, because a person only worships one whom he knows to deserve worship because of His Names and Attributes. Hence Ibrahim said to his father: “O my father, why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees nor benefits you at all?” [Maryam 19:42]. Thus singling out Allah in worship, Tawhid of divinity, includes Tawhid of Lordship and Tawhid of the Names and Attributes.
