Original Q&A · Full displayed answer

The original question specifically concerns an imam who gives salam after three rakahs. The entire answer preserves both situations: unresolved doubt before salam, and being alerted to an omitted rakah after salam. Their different positions for the prostrations of forgetfulness and the absence of a new opening takbir are retained.

Original question

If an imam is unsure in a four-rakah prayer whether he has prayed three or four, then gives salam, and some worshippers tell him afterwards that he prayed only three, should he say a new opening takbir for the fourth rakah, or simply stand and recite al-Fatihah without that takbir? Should the prostrations of forgetfulness be before or after salam?

Answer

If the imam or a person praying alone is unsure in a four-rakah prayer whether he has prayed three or four, he must build on what is certain—the lower number. He counts it as three, performs the fourth, then makes the prostrations of forgetfulness before giving salam. Abu Said al-Khudri narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, “If one of you is unsure in prayer and does not know whether he has prayed three or four, he should discard the doubt and build on what he is certain of, then perform two prostrations before giving salam. If he has prayed five, they make his prayer even; if he has prayed the full number, they humiliate Satan.” Muslim recorded it in his Sahih.

If, however, he gives salam after three rakahs and is then alerted to that, he stands without a new takbir, intending to continue the prayer, and performs the fourth rakah. He then sits for the tashahhud. After completing the tashahhud, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and making supplication, he gives salam, then performs two prostrations of forgetfulness and gives salam again.

This is preferable for anyone who mistakenly gives salam before completing the prayer. It is established that the Prophet ﷺ gave salam after two rakahs of Zuhr or Asr. Dhul-Yadayn alerted him, so he stood and completed his prayer, gave salam, performed the prostrations of forgetfulness, then gave salam again.

It is also established that he gave salam after three rakahs of Asr. When he was alerted to that, he performed the fourth, gave salam, performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness, then gave salam again.
