Original question
How is the prayer of istikhārah performed? Is its supplication before the salām or after it?
Answer
The prayer of istikhārah is a Sunnah. Its supplication is made after the salām, as stated in the noble hadith.
Its manner is to pray two rakʿahs like other voluntary prayers, reciting the Opening of the Book and whatever Quran is easy in each rakʿah. Then he raises his hands after the salām and makes the reported supplication: ‘O Allah, I seek Your choice through Your knowledge, seek ability through Your power, and ask You from Your immense favour. You have power and I do not; You know and I do not; and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter’—and he specifies it, whether marriage, travel or something else—‘is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and then bless it for me. If You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. Decree good for me wherever it may be, then make me content with it.’ Imam al-Bukhārī narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
