Original question
His fourth question is: What is the Witr prayer, when is its time, how many rakʿahs does it have, and how is it performed?
Answer
Witr is a Sunnah and a strongly emphasized act of drawing near to Allah. It begins after the ʿIshāʾ prayer and ends at dawn. This is Witr: it begins after ʿIshāʾ and ends at dawn. Its minimum is one rakʿah; that is the minimum. The best is eleven or thirteen rakʿahs, following the Prophet's ﷺ practice. If someone prays more—fifteen, or twenty with Witr, or the like—there is no harm or objection. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The night prayer is two by two. If one of you fears the arrival of dawn, let him pray one rakʿah, making what he has prayed odd.” He did not set a limit. This indicates that praying Witr as five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, seventeen, nineteen, twenty-one or twenty-three is all good, as is more than that. If he prays only one rakʿah of Witr, that suffices. This is clear from the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Yes.
Presenter: He also asks: How does it relate to the even-numbered prayer?
Shaykh: The even-numbered prayer may be separate from it, which is better; or the Witr may be joined together—five, seven or nine rakʿahs continuously. There is no harm; the Prophet ﷺ did this. But if he prays seven continuously, he sits in the sixth, recites the first tashahhud, then stands and performs the seventh. If he prays nine continuously, the Sunnah is to sit in the eighth, recite the first tashahhud, then stand and perform the ninth. The best is to give the salām after every two rakʿahs. This is best because the Prophet ﷺ said: “The night prayer is two by two.” If he performs five continuously as Witr, or three continuously as Witr, he prays them straight through without sitting: three without sitting in the second, or five without sitting in any of them except the last. This is best. As for seven and nine, he sits in the sixth of seven and the eighth of nine for the first tashahhud, then stands and performs the seventh or the ninth. But, as explained, it is better to give the salām after every two and then pray one rakʿah of Witr, whether he prays seven, five, three, nine, eleven, thirteen or more. Yes. There is latitude in this, praise be to Allah; there is no difficulty.
