Original question

Tell us about seeking forgiveness: its wording, how to do it, and how many times to say it each day. A person feels that he falls short; he may have committed a grave sin and missed many righteous deeds. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer

Seeking forgiveness is commanded and prescribed, and a person is in great need of it. Allah, mighty and majestic, says: “Seek Allah's forgiveness; indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Especially Merciful” [al-Baqarah 2:199]. He, majestic and exalted, says: “Those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins” [Āl ʿImrān 3:135].

The believer is commanded to seek forgiveness at all times. The Prophet ﷺ used to seek forgiveness frequently, although he is the foremost of the children of Adam and Allah had forgiven his past and future sins. Despite that, he sought forgiveness frequently and said: “By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness more than seventy times in a day and night.” He, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: “O people, repent to your Lord, for I repent to Him a hundred times a day.” Seeking forgiveness is therefore something required, and believing men and women should do it frequently.

Its wording is to say “I seek Allah's forgiveness.” After each obligatory prayer, when giving the salām, one says it three times, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do: “I seek Allah's forgiveness; I seek Allah's forgiveness; I seek Allah's forgiveness.” At any time, saying “O Allah, forgive me,” “O Allah, forgive my sins,” or “I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, besides whom there is no deity worthy of worship, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all, and I repent to Him,” is all good.

The point is to ask for forgiveness in any of these wordings: “My Lord, forgive me,” “O Allah, forgive me,” “O Allah, forgive my sins,” “O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You,” or “I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, besides whom there is no deity worthy of worship, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all, and I repent to Him.” All of this is good. Among his ﷺ supplications in an authentic hadith was: “O Allah, forgive my errors, my ignorance, my excesses in my affairs, and what You know better than I do. O Allah, forgive what I have done seriously and in jest, mistakenly and deliberately—all of that is in me. O Allah, forgive what I have done earlier and later, what I have concealed and disclosed, and what You know better than I do. You are the One who brings forward and the One who puts back, and You have power over all things.” Among his prayers for forgiveness was: “O Allah, forgive what I have done earlier and later, what I have concealed and disclosed, my excesses, and what You know better than I do. You are the One who brings forward and the One who puts back; there is no deity worthy of worship except You.”

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged the master supplication for forgiveness: “O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I remain faithful to my covenant with You and Your promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge before You Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You.”

If he says it in the morning with certainty in it, he enters Paradise; if he says it in the evening and dies upon it, he enters Paradise. This is a tremendous merit. It is called the master supplication for forgiveness, meaning the foremost and best form of seeking forgiveness: “O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I remain faithful to my covenant with You and Your promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge before You Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You.” Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good and be good to you.
