Original question

The first letter in this episode is from brother Atiyyah al-Juhani of Jeddah. We previously broadcast two of his questions and now present the rest. He says: I heard a scholar say that someone who thinks magic has been done against him should take seven sidr leaves, put them in a bucket of water and recite over it the protective surahs, Ayat al-Kursi, Surat ‘Say: O disbelievers,’ the words of Allah, ‘And what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut’ [al-Baqarah 2:102], and Surat al-Fatihah. How sound is this, and what should someone who thinks he has been affected by magic do? Please advise us; may Allah benefit you.

Answer

Praise belongs to Allah. May Allah grant peace and blessings to the Messenger of Allah, his family, his Companions and those who follow his guidance.

To proceed: there is no doubt that magic is real, that it occurs and has an effect by the permission of Allah, mighty and exalted. As He, glorified and exalted, says concerning magicians, ‘The two did not teach anyone’ [al-Baqarah 2:102]—meaning the two angels—‘until they said: We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve. They learned from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. Yet they do not harm anyone through it except by Allah’s permission’ [al-Baqarah 2:102]. Magic has an effect, but by Allah’s permission in His creation, exalted is He, since nothing exists except by His decree and determination. Yet this magic has a treatment and a remedy. It affected the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah freed him from it and saved him from its evil. They found what the magician had done; it was taken and destroyed, and Allah cured His Prophet of it, peace and blessings be upon him. Likewise, if what a magician has done is found—knotted threads, nails tied to one another or something else—it is destroyed. Magicians characteristically blow into knots, strike them and blow into them for their evil purposes. What they intend may come about by Allah’s permission, or it may be nullified. Our Lord has power over everything, exalted is He.

Sometimes magic is treated through recitation, whether the person affected recites for himself, if his intellect is sound, or someone else recites over him. The reciter blows lightly over his chest or another part of his body and recites al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, ‘Say: He is Allah, One,’ the two protective surahs, and the well-known verses about magic from Surat al-Araf, Surat Yunus and Surat Ta Ha.

From Surat al-Araf are His words, majestic and exalted: ‘We revealed to Musa: Throw your staff. At once it swallowed what they were falsely producing. Thus the truth was established and what they were doing was nullified. They were defeated there and returned humbled’ [al-Araf 7:117–119].

From Surat Yunus are His words: ‘Pharaoh said: Bring me every learned magician. When the magicians came, Musa said to them: Throw whatever you are going to throw. When they had thrown, Musa said: What you have brought is magic. Allah will certainly nullify it. Allah does not make the work of those who cause corruption prosper. Allah establishes the truth by His words, even though the criminals dislike it’ [Yunus 10:79–82].

From Surat Ta Ha are His words: ‘They said: Musa, either you throw, or we shall be the first to throw. He said: Rather, you throw. Then, through their magic, their ropes and sticks appeared to him to be moving. Musa felt fear within himself. We said: Do not fear; you will have the upper hand. Throw what is in your right hand: it will swallow what they have made. What they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will not succeed wherever he goes’ [Ta Ha 20:65–69].

He also recites Surat al-Kafirun, ‘Say: O disbelievers,’ to its end; Surat ‘Say: He is Allah, One’; ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak’; and ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’ It is preferable to repeat ‘Say: He is Allah, One’ and the two protective surahs three times.

Then he supplicates for the person’s healing: ‘O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction and heal. You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness.’ He repeats this three times: ‘Lord of mankind, remove the affliction and heal. You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no saqam’—meaning illness.

Likewise, he performs ruqyah for him by saying, ‘In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you, against everything that harms you, and against the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you. In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you.’ He repeats it three times and supplicates for healing and well-being. If, in his ruqyah, he says, ‘I seek protection for you in Allah’s perfect words from the evil of what He has created,’ and repeats it three times, that is good. All of this is beneficial treatment.

If he recites these verses and supplications over water, and the person affected by magic then drinks some of it and washes and bathes with the remainder, this too is one of the means of healing and well-being. If he crushes seven green sidr leaves and puts them in the water, this too is one of the means of healing. This has been tried frequently and Allah has brought benefit through it. We have done it with many people and Allah has benefited them through it. It is useful and beneficial treatment for those affected by magic.

This treatment likewise benefits someone prevented from having intercourse with his wife. Some people may, for certain reasons, be prevented from their wives and be unable to have intercourse with them. If he uses these verses and supplications—reciting them over himself, or having someone recite them over him, or reciting them over water and then drinking some and washing with the remainder, or adding seven sidr leaves to it, reciting what has been mentioned and washing with it—all of this is beneficial, by Allah’s permission, for the person affected by magic and the person prevented from having intercourse with his wife.

Healing is in the hand of Allah, exalted is He. These are only means. Allah grants success, exalted is He, and everything is in His hand, majestic and exalted. Both remedy and illness are entirely subject to His decree and determination, glorified and exalted is He. He has sent down no illness without providing a cure for it, out of His bounty, exalted is He. Those who know it know it, and those who do not know it are ignorant of it.

Allah is the One who grants success.
