Original question
What is your view on repeating Hajj given the crowding and mixing of men and women that occurs? Is it better for a woman not to go if she has already completed her obligatory Hajj, and perhaps has performed it twice or more?
Answer
There is no doubt that repeating Hajj has great merit for men and women. However, considering the severe crowding in recent years due to easier transport, people’s greater prosperity and the availability of security, together with the mixing of men and women during tawaf and in places of worship, and the failure of many women to avoid causes of temptation, we consider not repeating Hajj better and safer for their religion, and further removed from harm to a community that may be tempted by some of them. Likewise for men: if someone can refrain from frequently repeating Hajj with the aim of giving pilgrims more room and reducing crowding, we hope that his reward for refraining is greater than his reward for performing it, when that good intention is why he refrains. This is especially so if his Hajj leads followers to accompany him whose Hajj may cause considerable harm to other pilgrims through ignorance or a lack of gentleness during tawaf, stoning the pillars and other crowded acts of worship. The complete Islamic law rests on two great principles:
First: seeking to secure, complete and preserve the benefits recognised by Islam, as far as possible.
Second: seeking to avert all harms, or to reduce them.
The work of those who seek reform and call to the truth—foremost among them the messengers, peace and blessings be upon them—revolves around these two principles. Allah’s granting success and directing a servant’s words and deeds is proportionate to the servant’s knowledge of His law, its underlying wisdom and purposes, his effort to seek what pleases Allah and brings him nearer to Him, and his striving in that.
I ask Allah, mighty and exalted, to grant us, you and all Muslims success in everything that pleases Him and sets religious and worldly affairs right. He is All-Hearing and near.
