Original question

If I arrive at the mosque congregation while they are bowing, do I join with the opening takbir and the takbir for bowing? Should I recite the opening supplication?

Answer

When a Muslim enters the mosque while the imam is bowing, he is prescribed to join him with two takbirs: the first, the opening takbir, while standing; and the second, for bowing, as he bends down. In this situation he does not recite the opening supplication or al-Fatihah because time is short. That rakah counts for him. It is established in Sahih al-Bukhari that Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi, may Allah be pleased with him, entered the mosque one day while the Prophet ﷺ was bowing. He bowed before reaching the row, then entered the row. The Prophet ﷺ told him: “May Allah increase your eagerness, but do not do that again.” He did not order him to make up the rakah. This indicates that it counted, and that someone arriving while people are bowing must not bow alone before reaching the row. He must enter the row even if he misses the bowing, because the Prophet ﷺ told Abu Bakrah: “May Allah increase your eagerness, but do not do that again.” Allah is the One who grants success.
