Original question
Is congregational prayer obligatory or a Sunnah? What is the explanation of Allah Most High's words—I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan—“Establish prayer, give zakah, and bow with those who bow” [al-Baqarah 2:43]? Many people are careless about congregational prayer although they hear the call and are near the mosque. What is the ruling? Is the prayer of someone who hears the call but does not go to the mosque accepted?
Answer
Congregational prayer is obligatory. Whoever hears the call must respond to the caller. He may not pray alone or at home, even in a congregation at home; they are not entitled to do that. Rather, they must pray with the Muslims in the mosques, the houses of Allah, mighty and majestic. The noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever hears the call but does not come has no prayer unless he has an excuse.” A blind man asked him, peace and blessings be upon him: “Messenger of Allah, I have no guide who can regularly accompany me to the mosque. Is there a concession for me to pray at home?” He asked: “Do you hear the call to prayer?” The man said, “Yes.”
He said: “Then respond.” Muslim recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ. Another narration says: “I find no concession for you.”
It is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs that he, peace and blessings be upon him, considered burning the houses of those who stayed away. This indicates that performing it in the mosques with the Muslims is obligatory. A person may not pray alone or at home; rather, he must join his Muslim brothers and answer the caller. Whoever abandons this resembles the hypocrites in this action. The scholars—may Allah have mercy on them—differed about whether his prayer is valid, holding two views:
Most hold that it is valid, while he incurs sin.
Some scholars say it is not valid when he prays alone and abandons the congregation. The believer must therefore beware of staying away, pray with his Muslim brothers, and avoid resembling the hypocrites. Allah is the One whose help is sought. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
