Original Q&A · Full displayed answer

The ruling concerns a woman leading other women. It preserves the distinction between permission and obligation, the position within the first row, and audible versus quiet recitation. The Companion reports are reproduced as attributed in the answer; their individual chains have not been independently assessed here.

Original question

If women gather at prayer time in a mosque or another pure place, must they pray in congregation, or may each pray alone? If they pray together, how does their imam lead them, and does she recite aloud or quietly? Is congregational prayer obligatory or recommended in this situation? May Allah reward you.

Answer

When women gather in any place, congregation is not obligatory for them. Each may pray alone without blame, since congregation is a matter for men; it is not required of women. But if they pray together with one of them leading, there is no harm. It is reported from Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, and Umm Salamah that they sometimes led groups of women. If a woman leads a group of women in her home or elsewhere, there is no harm.

When she leads women, she stands among them, in the middle of the first row, rather than ahead of them as a man does. She raises her voice for the takbirs. In an audible prayer such as Maghrib, Isha or Fajr she recites aloud so that they hear and benefit. In a quiet prayer she recites quietly, as a man does, but raises her voice for the takbirs and “Allah hears whoever praises Him” so that the women can hear and follow her. She must pray with humility and stillness and avoid rushing, so that they may follow her example. Yes.
