Original question
He also asks: When a Muslim reads any surah of the Quran or any of the noble Prophetic hadiths, is he required to memorize it? Does a person who memorizes and then forgets become sinful? May Allah reward you with good and be good to you.
Answer
He is not required to memorize. Rather, he should reflect upon the Quran and recite it frequently so that he benefits, because reading the Quran contains tremendous good. Allah, glorified is He, says: “Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most upright” [al-Isrāʾ 17:9]. He says: “Say: For those who believe, it is guidance and a healing” [Fuṣṣilat 41:44]. He, mighty and majestic, says: “A blessed Book that We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect on its verses and people of understanding may take heed” [Ṣād 38:29].
What is prescribed for men and women alike—for every Muslim—is to study this Noble Quran, reflect upon it, recite it frequently, act upon what it contains, and ask the people of knowledge about anything unclear. He asks the people of knowledge about what is unclear by telephone, by correspondence, or in person. This is what is prescribed for every Muslim.
But he is not required to memorize it. If he memorizes it, that is better and is a great good, but memorization is not required of him. Rather, he should strive to recite frequently, reflect and act, because the purpose of recitation is action: fulfilling obligations and avoiding prohibitions. Reading the Quran also recalls Paradise and the Fire, gives knowledge of the circumstances of earlier peoples, and enables one to take lessons from what happened to them. All these things are present in the Noble Quran.
Likewise, believing men and women should strive to review hadiths, read them and benefit from them, in works such as the two Ṣaḥīḥs of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, the four Sunan collections, Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, al-Muntaqā, Bulūgh al-Marām, ʿUmdat al-Ḥadīth and Jāmiʿ al-Uṣūl.
If a believing man or woman is a student of knowledge, they should benefit from these books. If memorization is possible, memorizing whatever hadiths one can—for example from Bulūgh al-Marām, ʿUmdat al-Ḥadīth, or al-Nawawī's Forty Hadiths with Ibn Rajab's completion—brings immense benefit. In any case, the more a person reviews and reads, the more he will benefit and memorize some material. This is a great good. Every male and female student of knowledge should give attention to this matter, concerning both the Quran and the Sunnah. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
