Original Q&A · Full displayed answer

This concerns material impurity on clothing discovered or remembered after prayer. It is not the ruling for praying without required wudu or ghusl. Ibn Baz’s preference between two scholarly views is retained.

Original question

His second question is: I prayed while my underclothes were impure, having forgotten about it. Must I repeat the prayer?

Answer

If a Muslim prays with impurity on his clothing and only remembers or discovers it after finishing, his prayer is valid according to the correct view. He is excused by ignorance or forgetfulness when the prayer has ended before he knows. Allah says: “Our Lord, do not take us to account if we forget or make a mistake” [al-Baqarah 2:286]. It is established that the Prophet ﷺ began prayer one day with filth on his sandals. Jibril informed him during the prayer, so he removed them and continued without repeating its beginning, because he had not known about the filth. Likewise, someone who begins prayer with impurity on his clothes and only discovers or remembers it after finishing has a valid prayer according to the more correct of the two scholarly views.

Yes.
