Original question
The first letter in this episode comes from the listener ʿAbd al-Wadūd ʿAbd Allāh Nājī Mujāhid al-Tamīmī in Yemen. He has several questions. In one he asks: Is Witr obligatory? Did the Messenger ﷺ command the people of the Quran to perform Witr?
Answer
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise belongs to Allah. May Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, his Companions, and those who follow his guidance.
To proceed: Witr is a Sunnah according to the scholars; the majority of scholars hold that it is a Sunnah and is not obligatory. Thus ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “Witr is not obligatory like the prescribed prayer; rather, it is a Sunnah established by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Among the evidence is his ﷺ response when asked about anything beyond the five prayers. The questioner asked, “Am I required to do anything else?” He replied, “No, unless you do so voluntarily.” When the man asked about prayer, he told him about the five prayers. The man then asked, “Am I required to do anything else?” He replied, “No, unless you do so voluntarily.”
Witr is an emphasized Sunnah between the ʿIshāʾ prayer and dawn. Its minimum is one rakʿah. More is better, such as three, five or more. The best is eleven or thirteen, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed it. There is no harm in praying more than that. He ﷺ said: “Perform Witr, O people of the Quran, for Allah is One and loves what is odd.” This command is for emphasis, not obligation; according to the scholars, it is for emphasis. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
