Original question

I own a plot of land from which I derive no benefit and keep it for a time of need. Must I pay zakah on this land? If I pay zakah, must I estimate its price each time?

Answer

You owe no zakah on this land. Zakah is only obligatory on the value of such assets if they are prepared for trade. Land, real estate, cars, furnishings and similar assets are not subject to zakah in themselves. If money—that is, cash—is intended through them, so that they are prepared for buying, selling and trade, zakah becomes obligatory on their value. If they are not prepared for trade, as in your question, no zakah is due on them. Allah is the One who grants success.
