Original question

Is zakah due on land purchased with the intention of selling it again?

Answer

Yes. If someone buys land, a car, a building or anything else with the intention of selling it, he pays zakah on it when a year has passed. It is called one of the trade goods. This is the position of the majority of scholars, and some have reported consensus on it.

This is indicated by what Abū Dāwūd—may Allah have mercy on him—narrated from Samurah ibn Jundub, may Allah be pleased with him: “The Messenger ﷺ commanded us to give charity from what we prepare for sale.” This indicates that zakah is paid from what is prepared for sale. The report has supporting narrations, and its meaning is also sound, because trading wealth does not remain in cash: it is turned into goods such as cars, land, houses and other things people need. When a year has passed, zakah must be paid on the value of the goods he holds for sale, whether cars, land, houses or anything else. Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
