Original question
What is the ruling on charging more in deferred-payment and instalment sales?
Answer
A sale with payment deferred to a known date is permissible when it fulfils the required conditions. Likewise, there is no harm in paying the price in instalments if the instalment amounts and due dates are known. Allah, glorified is He, says: “O you who believe, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down” [al-Baqarah 2:282]. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever pays in advance for something must do so for a known measure and a known weight, to a known term.” There is also the story of Barīrah, established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs: she agreed to buy her freedom from her owners for nine ūqiyyahs, one each year. This is payment in instalments. The Prophet ﷺ did not object to it; rather, he approved it and did not forbid it.
There is no difference here between the price being equal to the goods' cash price and being higher because of the deferred payment. Allah is the One who grants success.
