Original question
He was asked about a man who vowed to fast Mondays and Thursdays, then wished to fast one day and not fast the next. He could arrange this only by fasting four days and not fasting three, or not fasting four and fasting three. Which is better? Please give us a ruling; may Allah have mercy on you.
Answer
Praise be to Allah. If he moves from fasting Mondays and Thursdays to fasting one day and not fasting the next, he has moved to something better. There is disagreement about this, but the stronger view is that it is permissible, just as if someone vowed to pray in a less excellent mosque and prayed in a more excellent one—for example, if he vowed to pray in al-Masjid al-Aqṣā and prayed in the mosque of one of the two Sacred Sanctuaries. Allah knows best.
