Original question
Our brother asks: Is it permissible to open a bird's mouth and give it grain, perhaps more than it can bear, so that it fattens quickly?
Answer
This requires a distinction, because harm is feared. If the bird is ill and needs someone to put food in its mouth, there is no harm in giving it what it needs, taking care not to injure it. But if the bird pecks and eats by itself, there is no need for this, because it may harm and hurt it. We are commanded to treat animals gently, not to hurt or wrong them, and not to strike them except when there is a need. Forcing food into its mouth with the intention of fattening it is therefore something that should not be done, because harm is feared.
The point is that the distinction must be made: if the bird or animal is healthy and eats and pecks grain by itself, none of this is needed. But if it is ill, unable to eat, and needs someone to bring food to it, it is helped, as a human being is helped—in a way that does not harm it. Yes.
Presenter: But what if the intention, as he said, is for it to fatten quickly?
Shaykh: No, that is not right; it is not right if it harms it. If it does not harm it, and he supplies it with food and takes care to give it good feed, there is no harm. But doing it in a way that harms or hurts it—no.
Presenter: May Allah reward you and benefit people through your knowledge. Your Eminence, I have seen people inject birds with water when selling them so that they have a particular appearance at the sale. Might this involve deception?
Shaykh: This is not permissible, because it amounts to deception, giving people the impression that they are fat and large when that is not the case. Anything that gives the purchaser or customer an impression contrary to reality is not permissible, because the Messenger, peace be upon him, said: ‘Whoever cheats us is not one of us.’ This is what he ﷺ said: ‘Whoever cheats us is not one of us.’ When he passed a heap of food in the market and put his hand into it, his fingers encountered moisture. He said: ‘What is this, owner of the food?’ He replied: ‘The sky has affected it, Messenger of Allah’—meaning the rain. He said: ‘Why did you not put it on top of the food so that people could see it? Whoever cheats is not of me.’ Muslim narrated it in the Ṣaḥīḥ.
The point is that Muslims must deal sincerely with one another and avoid cheating. Anything that leaves a buyer with a false impression when selling an animal or anything else is not permissible.
Presenter: May Allah reward you and benefit people through your knowledge.
