Original Q&A · Full displayed answer

The answer rejects the claimed restriction through lack of religious evidence; it does not remove the obligation of ghusl. Its quotations from the collections are attributed as cited, with the additional wording from al-Hakim distinguished below.

Original question

If a man in janabah cuts his nails or moustache or combs his hair, is there anything against him? Some have said that if someone in janabah cuts his hair or nails, those parts return to him in the Hereafter and he rises on the Day of Resurrection with a share of janabah corresponding to what he removed, with a share on every hair. Is that correct?

Answer

It is established from the Prophet ﷺ in the reports of Hudhayfah and Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with them, that when someone in janabah was mentioned to him, he said: “The believer does not become impure.” In al-Hakim’s Sahih it reads: “Alive or dead.” I know of no religious evidence for disliking the removal of the hair or nails of someone in janabah. Rather, the Prophet ﷺ told someone who embraced Islam: “Remove from yourself the hair of unbelief and be circumcised.” He ordered the new Muslim to bathe but did not order him to postpone circumcision or hair removal until after bathing. The unrestricted wording permits both arrangements. Likewise, a menstruating woman is instructed to comb her hair when bathing, although combing removes some hair. Allah knows best.
