Original question
May makeup fasting and voluntary fasting be combined with a single intention?
Answer
It seems she is referring, for example, to fasting on the Day of Arafah with the intention of making up a missed fast, or fasting on Ashura with that intention. If that is the case, there is no harm. A woman may fast on the Day of Arafah intending to make up a missed fast, and she receives the reward of fasting on Arafah. Likewise, she may fast on Ashura intending to make up a missed fast and receives its reward.
Follow-up question: Does this also apply to fasting the six days of Shawwal?
The fast of Ramadan must be completed in full before fasting the six days of Shawwal. For example, if she owes five days from Ramadan and makes them up one day for each missed day, then fasts the six days, there is no harm, even if the days are not consecutive. The important point to understand is that the makeup fasts of Ramadan must be finished. This issue causes confusion for many people. Some women think that fasting six days of Shawwal is permissible even before making up the missed fasts. Indeed, if Shawwal does not have enough days remaining for both the six days and the makeup fasts, we hear of some women fasting the six days before making up what they missed. This is wrong: the makeup fasts of Ramadan must precede the six days of Shawwal.
Follow-up question: Then fasting six days of Shawwal is not valid until the person has completed the fast of Ramadan in full?
Yes.
