Original question
The listener M. M. from Qatar writes to ask: Some people bring old copies of the Quran, leave them in mosques, and exchange them for new copies from the same mosque. Is this permissible?
Answer
No one has the right to take any of the mosque's copies of the Quran. The copies in mosques must remain in the mosques. No one has the right to take any of them or exchange them; rather, they must be left in the mosques, because those who provided them intended them as an endowment from which Muslims would benefit in the mosque. No one therefore has the right to take any of them or exchange them, whether for old copies or new ones.
Presenter: Is borrowing from mosques permissible or not?
Shaykh: He does not have the right to borrow them. As for libraries, there is no harm if the library's director or person in charge permits lending. But books or copies of the Quran placed in the mosque are not to be borrowed; rather, one reads them while in the mosque. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
