Original question
At our workplace, a number of people perform congregational prayer, but I do not join them for the following reasons. First, they always combine Ẓuhr with ʿAṣr without a reason, and likewise Maghrib with ʿIshāʾ. They also do not clasp their hands below the chest. Is praying with them valid? Please guide us; may Allah reward you with good.
Answer
A Muslim may not combine two prayers while resident without a reason, such as illness or irregular bleeding for a woman. Rather, every prayer must be performed at its proper time: Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ each at its time. Combining two prayers without a valid religious reason is impermissible. As for the report that he ﷺ prayed eight together and seven together in Madinah—meaning Ẓuhr with ʿAṣr and Maghrib with ʿIshāʾ—the scholars understood this to have been for a reason. Some said there was an epidemic, meaning widespread illness, which caused hardship for the Muslims, so he, peace and blessings be upon him, combined the prayers for them. This is reliably reported from him only once, for the stated excuse. It is not reliably reported that he did it habitually or on repeated occasions. Rather, this came once through Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Others said that the combining was apparent rather than actual: he prayed Ẓuhr at the end of its time, ʿAṣr at the beginning of its time, Maghrib at the end of its time, and ʿIshāʾ at the beginning of its time. Al-Nasāʾī narrated this with an authentic chain from Ibn ʿAbbās: he prayed Ẓuhr at the end of its time and brought ʿAṣr forward, and prayed Maghrib at the end of its time and brought ʿIshāʾ forward. It was called combining, but in fact he prayed each prayer within its own time.
This form of combining is expressly stated in the authentic narration from Ibn ʿAbbās, so it must be accepted as apparent combining. No one should therefore use it as evidence for combining without an excuse.
As for you, the questioner, you may pray only Ẓuhr and Maghrib with them at their proper times. You may not pray ʿAṣr and ʿIshāʾ with them; rather, you must delay them until their proper times.
