Original question

He also asks: May supplications from the Quran and Sunnah be worn on a man's or woman's chest as protection from jinn and devils?

Answer

This is not permissible. Wearing protective amulets is not permissible, whether they contain Quran, Sunnah or anything else. They are called tamāʾim, jāmiʿāt or ḥujub; they may not be worn. The Prophet ﷺ said concerning this: “Whoever wears an amulet, may Allah not fulfil his purpose; and whoever wears a shell, may Allah not grant him repose.” He also said: “Incantations, amulets and love charms are shirk.” The incantations intended here are those whose meaning is unknown or that contain shirk or something objectionable; these are forbidden. Amulets are likewise all forbidden: something written on pieces of material, paper or the like and placed in a covering or a small bottle, then hung on a child or sick person. None of this is permissible. It is an amulet even if it contains Quran or permissible supplications. The correct view is that amulets are prohibited without exception. Those containing something other than Quran are more severely prohibited; Qur'anic amulets are prohibited to block the means to wrongdoing. The believer must refrain so as not to fall into what Allah, majestic and exalted, has forbidden.

Allah, glorified is He, has prescribed for His servants what brings them happiness, salvation and well-being. He has not prescribed what harms them, but what benefits them and brings happiness in this life and the next. A person therefore has no right to introduce into the religion something Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has not authorized.

Shaykh: Would you repeat the question?

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Our brother asks: May supplications found in the Quran and Sunnah be worn on a man's or woman's chest?

Shaykh: Yes, as explained, this is an innovation. He may not wear them even if they contain Quran or Sunnah, as explained, because the Messenger ﷺ prohibited amulets and warned that Allah would not fulfil the purpose of whoever wears one: “Whoever wears an amulet, may Allah not fulfil his purpose; and whoever wears a shell, may Allah not grant him repose.”

The believing man and woman must seek protection through prescribed supplications, not through hanging things on themselves. Supplication is made for the sick person's healing and well-being, and for the child's healing and well-being. Protection is sought for the child, saying at bedtime: “I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from the evil of what He has created,” as the Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, saying: “I seek protection for you both in Allah's perfect words from every devil and harmful creature and from every harmful eye.” If the child can understand, he is trained to make remembrance and supplication and seek refuge in Allah, so that he seeks protection himself when sleeping, entering and leaving.

The point is that there is no need to wear amulets. Some scholars permitted an amulet containing Quran or permissible supplications, saying that this is like ruqyah: just as ruqyah with Quran and good supplications is permissible, so is an amulet containing Quran.

The answer is that there is a difference. Concerning ruqyah, it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ performed it and had it performed for him, and he said: “There is no harm in ruqyah so long as it contains no shirk.” This establishes the exception for permissible ruqyah from the statement, “Incantations, amulets and love charms are shirk,” because the Messenger ﷺ performed ruqyah and had it performed for him. But no exception has been reported for amulets, nor that he hung an amulet on anyone. Amulets therefore cannot be equated with ruqyah; rather, they are prohibited without exception. Moreover, wearing amulets containing Quran or permissible supplications is a means leading to wearing other amulets. Who can tell that this one is sound and that one is not? The door is thus opened to shirk and other amulets. The Sharia blocks means leading to shirk. The hadiths prohibit wearing amulets generally, and blocking those means is required and obligatory. Both considerations require prohibiting all amulets, even those containing Quran or permissible supplications, to block the means to shirk and act upon the general wording. This also trains the believer to trust Allah, rely upon Him, ask Him and humbly implore Him to protect him from what would harm him and suffice him against what concerns him, rather than relying on something hanging around his neck or upper arm.

What the Sharia has brought is entirely good and beneficial for young and old, sick and healthy alike. May Allah grant everyone success and guidance. Yes.

Presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
