Original question

He was asked about a man who had prayed his obligatory prayer, then came to a congregational mosque and found them praying. May he pray a missed prayer with the congregation?

Answer

If a man has prayed the obligatory prayer and then comes to a mosque where that same prayer is being performed, he should pray it with them, whether or not he owes a missed prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed this when he said to two men who had not prayed with the people: “Why did you not pray? Are you not Muslims?” They replied: “Messenger of Allah, we prayed at our lodgings.” He said: “If you have prayed at your lodgings and then come to a congregational mosque, pray with them; it will be a voluntary prayer for you.”

Someone who owes a missed prayer must hasten to make it up immediately, whether he missed it deliberately or forgetfully, according to the majority of scholars, including Mālik, Aḥmad, Abū Ḥanīfah, and others. Likewise, the stronger position in al-Shāfiʿī’s school is that when it was missed deliberately, making it up is obligatory immediately.

When he prays with the congregation, he intends the second prayer as a repetition. According to the correct view, the first prayer is obligatory and the second voluntary, as this hadith and others indicate. It has also been said that the more complete of them is the obligatory prayer, and it has been said that this is left to Allah, Exalted is He. Allah knows best.
