Original question
He was asked about a man who gave someone a horse. After some time, the giver demanded rent for it. The recipient said: “I cannot pay anything; otherwise, take your horse.” The giver said: “I will not take it unless you pay its rent.” Is that permissible, and is he entitled to any rent?
Answer
If the recipient returns the gifted property to him, the giver is entitled to nothing beyond that. He has no right to demand rent or compensation for it: the recipient bore its liability and fed it, with his benefit from it being in return for that.
