The stated distinction rests on whether reliable guidance was available. Genuine investigation in its absence is distinguished from neglecting accessible guidance.

Original question
What is the ruling if, after investigating, it becomes clear that prayer was performed facing away from the qiblah? Does it differ between a Muslim country, a non-Muslim country and the wilderness?
Answer
If a Muslim is travelling or in a place where no one is available to guide him to the qiblah, his prayer is valid when he sincerely investigates its direction and later discovers that he prayed in another direction.
If he is in Muslim lands, his prayer is not valid, because he can ask someone to guide him to the qiblah and can also identify it through the mosques.
