Original question

A sister identified by the initials F. S. Z. from Unayzah in Saudi Arabia asks: During my school years, our school had a library containing books and magazines that the students paid no attention to. I loved reading and collecting books. I liked some religious books there, as well as medical books and storybooks—about four books altogether. I took them from the school library to read and return them. Amid the pressure of studying, I forgot to return them. About three years after I graduated, a sister told me that taking these books and not returning them was forbidden and that we would be held accountable for it on the Day of Resurrection. When I took them, I did not know the ruling on taking them. Neither the teachers nor the students paid attention to the library. I have benefited from the books, especially the religious ones, and do not want to return them because they contain rulings that have benefited me. What is the ruling? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer

You must return them to the library, because they have the status of an endowment for the library. No one may take anything from public or school libraries except with the permission of the person responsible, as a loan for a specified period. Along with that, you must repent to Allah for what you did. We ask Allah to accept your repentance and forgive you; He is the best One to ask.
