Original Q&A · Full displayed answer
The question concerns discovery after the prayer. The full answer also distinguishes valid tayammum from praying without lawful purification and explains Ibn Uthaymeen’s view that ending the prayer time alone does not invalidate tayammum.

Original question
Esteemed Shaykh, if the imam only discovers after the prayer that his wudu had been invalidated, must he and the followers repeat the prayer?
Answer
The ruling is that the imam must repeat the prayer, while the followers do not have to repeat it. They have earned the reward of congregational prayer because they prayed in congregation, so that reward is recorded for them. It should also be clear that when we speak of someone praying without wudu or without ghusl for janabah, someone with a valid excuse who cannot use water performs tayammum instead. When water cannot be used, tayammum takes its place. If a person cannot find water, performs tayammum, and prays, his prayer is valid. Even if he remains for months without water, or remains ill for months and cannot use water, his prayer with tayammum is valid. Tayammum replaces water when water cannot be used. Since it takes its place in those circumstances, someone who purifies himself with tayammum remains purified until that state is invalidated. Even if the prayer time ends while he remains upon his tayammum, he need not repeat tayammum for the next prayer, because tayammum purifies. When mentioning tayammum in Surah al-Maidah, Allah says: “Allah does not intend to place you in hardship, but He intends to purify you and complete His favour upon you” [al-Maidah 5:6]. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification.”
