Original question
He was asked about someone who caught one rakʿah of Friday prayer and then stood to complete what he owed: should he recite aloud or not?
Answer
Rather, he recites quietly, not aloud, because a latecomer who stands to complete what he missed is praying individually in that portion and has the ruling of someone praying alone. In the part he catches with the imam, he has the ruling of a follower. For this reason, a latecomer prostrates for forgetfulness if he forgets something while completing what he missed. Accordingly, the latecomer recites aloud only where someone praying alone would do so. A scholar who holds that an individual recites aloud in Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ and Fajr holds that he does so when completing the first two rakʿahs; a scholar who holds that an individual does not recite aloud likewise holds that the latecomer does not. No one performs Friday prayer alone, so an individual reciting it aloud is not a case that arises. The latecomer is like an individual and therefore does not recite aloud, although he has attained Friday prayer by inclusion in and following the congregation. What is required for the principal is not necessarily required for what follows it. Thus the portion completed by a latecomer does not require the stipulated number of worshippers or similar conditions.
The Sunnah has established, however, that whoever catches one rakʿah of the prayer has caught the prayer. Thus he has caught Friday prayer, just as someone who catches one rakʿah of ʿAṣr before sunset, or one rakʿah of Fajr before sunrise, has caught it, even though the remainder of the prayer is performed outside its time. Allah knows best.
