Original question
Esteemed Shaykh, we would like to know what astrology is and its ruling.
Answer
Astrology (tanjīm) is derived from the word for a star. It means using celestial conditions to infer events on earth: the astrologer links what happens, or will happen, on earth to the stars—their movements, rising, setting, conjunction, separation, and similar matters. Astrology is a form of magic and is forbidden, because it rests on delusions that have no reality. Events on earth have no such connection with events in the heaven. The people of the pre-Islamic period believed that the sun and moon eclipsed only because someone had died—that is, because a great person had died. When the sun eclipsed during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime on the day his son Ibrāhīm, may Allah be pleased with him, died, people said: “The sun has eclipsed because Ibrāhīm died.” After praying the eclipse prayer, the Prophet ﷺ addressed them and said: “The sun and moon are two signs among Allah’s signs. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life.” Thus the Prophet ﷺ rejected linking earthly events to celestial conditions in this way; this is indeed the case.
Astrology in this sense is a form of magic. It is also a cause of delusions and psychological reactions without any real foundation, plunging a person into endless delusions, ill omens, and bewilderment.
There is another use of the stars: using their rising to recognize times, periods, and seasons. There is no objection or blame in this. For example, someone may say that when a particular star appears, the rainy season or the time when fruits ripen has begun, or something similar. There is no objection or blame in this.
