Original Q&A · Complete published question and answer
The complete official item is included. The published question has an interrupted transition between hearing recitation while working and leading audible prayer. The English supplies a bracketed bridge for readability without adding a ruling. The distinction between prostration inside and outside prayer is preserved.

Original question
Our brother asks: What is the ruling on the prostration of recitation? Should a Muslim prostrate even if he is working while hearing the Quran? [He also asks about] prostration during an audible prayer while he is leading the worshippers. He then asks: What is the correct method of the prostration of recitation, and how should I perform it properly? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer
The prostration of recitation is a Sunnah. There are specified places of prostration in the Quran—fifteen, the first at the end of al-Aʿrāf and the last at the end of the surah beginning “Read.” If a believer comes to one outside prayer, he prostrates, even without ritual purity according to the correct view; ritual purity is not a condition for it. It is better to say the takbīr once at the beginning only, then prostrate and say what he says in the prostration of prayer: “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High; glory be to my Lord, the Most High,” and offer whatever supplication he can. It has no concluding salām and no second takbīr. This is the preferred and stronger view.
If he comes to it during prayer, prostration is prescribed. In an audible prayer such as Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ, Fajr or Friday prayer, prostration is prescribed, and the followers prostrate behind him. If he is the imam, they prostrate with him when he prostrates. But when he is leading a silent prayer, prostration is not prescribed because it may confuse the people. If he reads it in silent recitation, such as Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, the third rakʿah of Maghrib, or the third and fourth of ʿIshāʾ, it is better not to prostrate so that he does not confuse the people. If he is praying alone, however, there is no harm—for example, someone praying a voluntary prayer or someone who missed the obligatory congregational prayer and is praying alone. He may prostrate during silent recitation because there is no confusion.
During prayer, he says the takbīr with every lowering and rising: when he prostrates and when he rises. The Prophet ﷺ used to say the takbīr with every lowering and rising, and that includes the prostration of recitation during prayer. It is a Sunnah, not obligatory. It is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs that Zayd ibn Thābit—may Allah be pleased with him—recited Surah al-Najm to him ﷺ, and he, peace and blessings be upon him, did not prostrate. This shows that it is not obligatory. ʿUmar—ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him—said: “Allah has not made prostration obligatory upon us; it is only if we wish.” That is, whoever wishes may prostrate and whoever wishes may refrain. It is a Sunnah, not obligatory. Yes.
