Original question
She says: Many women call covering the head while leaving the face uncovered “hijab.” Would Your Eminence clarify this confusion, explain the meaning of hijab and the benefit a woman gains by covering her face from non-maḥram men? May Allah reward you with the best reward.
Answer
There are two aspects of hijab. One is obligatory according to all scholars: covering the head and body apart from the face and hands. As for covering the face and hands from men, this is a matter of disagreement among scholars. The correct view is that she must conceal her face and hands from men, because the face is ʿawrah and adornment, and the hands are likewise. Allah, majestic and exalted, says: “They must not display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers or their husbands' fathers” [al-Nūr 24:31]. The face is a major part of adornment, and the hands likewise. She is therefore prevented from displaying her adornment to non-maḥram men in markets, before her husband's brothers and paternal uncles, before servants and the like, guarding against temptation affecting her or arising through her.
In another verse He says: “When you ask them for something, ask them from behind a screen. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts” [al-Aḥzāb 33:53]. He, glorified is He, thus explained that hijab is purer for everyone's hearts, men and women. His words “from behind a screen” include the face and the rest of the body. ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said concerning the Farewell Pilgrimage: “We were with the Prophet ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage. When men approached us, one of us would lower her outer garment over her face; when they moved away, we would uncover.” In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, she—may Allah be pleased with her—said that when she heard Ṣafwān ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal pronounce the words of return to Allah upon seeing that the army had left her behind: “I heard his voice. He had seen me before hijab, so when I heard his voice I covered my face.” This indicates that before hijab women did not cover their faces, but when the verse of hijab was revealed, they covered their faces from men.
The verse of hijab is His statement: “When you ask them for something, ask them from behind a screen. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts” [al-Aḥzāb 33:53]. Hijab covers the entire body. The head must be covered, and the feet must be covered, as must the chest, neckline and so on. The disagreement concerns the face and hands. Some scholars consider them not to be ʿawrah if the face has no adornment, kohl or beauty, and the hands have no jewellery or beauty. The correct view is that they are adornment and ʿawrah and must be covered in all cases, even without kohl, adornment or jewellery on the hands. They are among the adornment mentioned in His words: “They must not display their adornment” [al-Nūr 24:31]. Even the foot and its anklet are to be concealed. He says: “Let them not stamp their feet so that their hidden adornment becomes known” [al-Nūr 24:31]. He forbade stamping the foot because it leads to the anklet becoming known. What, then, of displaying the face, neckline or hand?
Some who permit exposing the face and hands when there is no temptation may rely on a hadith narrated by Abū Dāwūd from ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—that Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr—may Allah Most High be pleased with them both—entered upon the Prophet ﷺ in ʿĀʾishah's house wearing thin clothes. The Prophet ﷺ turned away from her and said: “Asmāʾ, when a woman reaches menstruation, nothing should be seen of her except this and this,” pointing to his face and hands. They say this shows that the face and hands are not ʿawrah, because he ﷺ said: “When a woman reaches menstruation, nothing should be seen of her except this and this.”
The answer is: yes, if authentic, this would explicitly indicate that they are not ʿawrah, provided the hadith occurred after hijab was prescribed. But the hadith is not authentic, and its date is unknown: was it before or after hijab? The hadith has several defects.
First, there is a break between the narrator reporting from ʿĀʾishah and ʿĀʾishah, as Abū Dāwūd—may Allah have mercy on him—said when narrating it: it is mursal, meaning disconnected. It is narrated by Khālid ibn Durayk from ʿĀʾishah, but he did not meet her or hear from her. A disconnected report is weak and is not used as proof.
The second defect is that among its narrators is a man called Saʿīd ibn Bashīr, who is weak and whose narration is not used as proof.
The third defect is that Qatādah narrates it from Khālid using the formula “from,” while he practised tadlīs. When someone who practises tadlīs uses that formula, his narration is not accepted until he explicitly establishes the transmission.
The fourth defect is that its text is objectionable. It does not befit Asmāʾ, a mature woman and the wife of al-Zubayr—one of the finest Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the ten promised Paradise—to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ in thin clothes through which her ʿawrah is visible. This should never be presumed of her, may Allah be pleased with her, nor does it befit her. She was older than ʿĀʾishah. No one should suppose that she entered upon the Prophet ﷺ wearing thin clothes through which her ʿawrah was visible, so that he turned away upon seeing her hair, chest and body. This should never be presumed of her. The text is therefore invalid and objectionable.
The fifth defect is that it is not established that this occurred after hijab, after the verse of hijab was revealed. Before hijab, a woman would uncover her face and hands and sit with people; then Allah revealed hijab and they were forbidden that. Even if the chain were authentic and the text sound, the person using it as proof would have to establish that it occurred after hijab. Before hijab, women uncovered their faces, hands and feet; then Allah revealed the verse of hijab, prohibited that and commanded covering, as in His words: “When you ask them for something, ask them from behind a screen” [al-Aḥzāb 33:53]; “They must not display their adornment except to their husbands or their fathers” [al-Nūr 24:31], and the rest of the verse; and: “O Prophet, tell your wives, daughters and the women of the believers to draw their outer garments over themselves” [al-Aḥzāb 33:59]. The jilbāb is what she places over her head and body. May Allah grant everyone success.
