Original question
A letter has reached the programme from Buraydah, sent by a listener who is a citizen of the brotherly state of Pakistan. I could make out part of his name, Farīd, but could not read the other part. He wrote in broken Arabic. I understood the following from his letter: I pray two Sunnah rakʿahs before the obligatory prayer, then four obligatory rakʿahs, then two Sunnah rakʿahs, then some voluntary prayer, and afterwards three rakʿahs of Witr. Is what I am doing correct? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer
Yes. The Sunnah is for a believer to pray two rakʿahs between the adhān and iqāmah, because the Prophet ﷺ said: “Between every two calls there is a prayer; between every two calls there is a prayer; between every two calls there is a prayer, for whoever wishes.” Two rakʿahs after the adhān are recommended after the Maghrib adhān and after the ʿIshāʾ adhān. After performing the obligatory prayer, he prays its two regular Sunnah rakʿahs, then Witr if he wishes—three, five or more. Delaying Witr until the end of the night is better if he is confident of getting up then and thinks it likely. Otherwise, the Sunnah is to pray Witr early in the night, as one, three or more rakʿahs, taking a prudent course. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fears that he will not get up at the end of the night should pray Witr at its beginning. Whoever expects to get up at the end of the night should pray Witr then, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed, and that is better.”
The Prophet ﷺ used to pray Witr early in the night, then in the middle of the night, and eventually his regular practice, peace and blessings be upon him, was at the end of the night. This is best for someone able to do it. Someone who fears that he will not get up should pray Witr early in the night.
As for Ẓuhr, he prays four rakʿahs before it. The regular Sunnah is four, in two prayers each ending with salām. Before ʿAṣr, likewise, four rakʿahs in two prayers are recommended. After Ẓuhr, four rakʿahs in two prayers: the regular Sunnah after it is two, but praying four afterwards is better, because the compilers of the Sunan narrated from Umm Ḥabībah—may Allah be pleased with her—that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever regularly observes four before Ẓuhr and four after it, Allah will forbid the Fire to him.” This great hadith… is authentic and indicates the merit of four before and four after it.
The regular Sunnah is four before it and two after it. But it is recommended to add two afterwards, making four after Ẓuhr; and before ʿAṣr, four in two prayers each ending with salām.
Before Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ, two rakʿahs are Sunnah under the general meaning of the hadith: “Between every two calls there is a prayer; between every two calls there is a prayer…” If he prays more than two, there is no harm. After each are two regular Sunnah rakʿahs: two after Maghrib with one concluding salām, and two after ʿIshāʾ with one concluding salām. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regularly maintained them. Then Witr follows ʿIshāʾ and its regular Sunnah. Even if he combines ʿIshāʾ with Maghrib at the earlier time, as a traveller does, he prays Witr after ʿIshāʾ, even within Maghrib time. Once he has prayed ʿIshāʾ combined with Maghrib at the earlier time, the time for Witr has begun, as for a sick person or traveller. Yes.
