Original question

If a Muslim says, ‘O Allah, I ask You by so-and-so’s standing,’ or ‘I ask You by so-and-so,’ or ‘by so-and-so’s deeds,’ does this invalidate tawhid?

Answer

This is called tawassul, and tawassul has different categories:

One is lawful tawassul: seeking nearness to Allah by obeying Him and following His law. This is the whole religion. Religion is seeking nearness to Allah through obedience, affirming His oneness and being sincere to Him, in order to enter Paradise and be saved from Hell. Affirming Allah’s oneness, obeying His commands and leaving what He forbids are the means to His Paradise and His honour.

The second type is seeking a means through His Names and Attributes and your righteous deeds in your supplications. This too is permissible: ‘O Allah, I ask You by Your Names and Attributes to forgive me. O Allah, I ask You by my faith in You and my love for You and Your Prophet. O Allah, I ask You by my righteous deeds, my obedience to You, my following Your law, my fulfilling trusts, my dutifulness to my parents and my keeping chaste from what You have forbidden me, my Lord; I ask You to forgive me.’ This is tawassul through Allah’s Names and Attributes and through your good deeds. All of this is good, lawful tawassul which we are commanded to practise.

The third kind of tawassul is through your brother’s supplication for you: ‘So-and-so, ask Allah for me’; ‘O Allah, I ask You to accept his supplication for me,’ and similar words. The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate for his Companions, and this is tawassul through his supplication, just as he supplicated for the blind man until Allah healed him. It is tawassul through the supplication of a living person. If he supplicates for you and asks forgiveness for you, you say, ‘O Allah, accept it from him.’ All this is permissible and lawful.

There is also invalid tawassul and tawassul involving shirk, which are of two types:

One type amounts to major shirk: seeking nearness to Allah by worshipping prophets, righteous people, celestial bodies and the like. As the disbelievers said, ‘We worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah’ [al-Zumar 39:3], and, ‘These are our intercessors with Allah’ [Yunus 10:18]. This is major shirk: seeking a means through prophets and righteous people by calling upon them alongside Allah, asking them for rescue, making vows to them, and drawing near to them through prostration, sacrifices and requests for aid. This is major shirk, though some polytheists call it tawassul. The same applies to seeking a means through celestial bodies, stars, the sun, the moon or idols by calling upon them, asking them for rescue and aid, sacrificing to them or making vows to them. This is tawassul involving shirk—major shirk.

What you have asked about, questioner, is the second type: forbidden, prohibited tawassul. It is saying, ‘O Allah, I ask You by the standing of Your Prophet,’ or ‘by the standing of the prophets,’ or ‘by the right of the prophets,’ or ‘by the right of my parents,’ or ‘by the right of so-and-so,’ or ‘by so-and-so’s standing.’ This is an innovation and is impermissible. It is not shirk, but it is one of the means that lead to shirk.

The correct view, held by the majority of scholars, is to prohibit it and that seeking a means in this way is impermissible. Allah has not prescribed for us tawassul through someone’s right, standing or person. Rather, one seeks a means through Allah’s Names and Attributes and through our righteous deeds, as He, mighty and exalted, says, ‘To Allah belong the most beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them’ [al-Araf 7:180]. In the authentic hadith, a man said, ‘O Allah, I ask You by my testimony that You are Allah; there is no god but Allah, the One, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor was begotten.’ When the Prophet heard a man supplicating with this supplication, he said, ‘He has asked Allah by His Name which, when He is called upon by it, He answers, and when He is asked by it, He gives.’

There is also the hadith of the three men who entered a cave and were shut in by a rock. They sought a means to Allah: one through his dutifulness to his parents, the second through his chastity in refraining from unlawful intercourse, and the third through his fulfilling a trust. Allah relieved their distress. Tawassul through faith, piety, righteous deeds and Allah’s Names and Attributes is what is prescribed; so too is your brother’s supplication for you when he supplicates for you. That is what is prescribed. But tawassul through someone’s standing, life, person or right is not prescribed. Rather, it is an innovation and is impermissible according to the scholars—according to the generality and majority of scholars—because it is an unprescribed means which Allah has not prescribed for us.
