Original question

He has a long question about reflecting upon the Noble Quran, beginning as follows: Allah Most High says, “Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” [Muḥammad 47:24], and He says, “Do they not reflect upon the Quran? Had it been from other than Allah, they would have found much inconsistency in it” [al-Nisāʾ 4:82]. He then asks: What is the nature of reflection upon the Quran in these two noble verses? What does the word “reflection” mean? Does it mean reflecting to attain correct understanding? Is there reward for reflection? Should a person who reflects upon the Noble Quran keep the results of his reflection for his personal benefit without sharing them? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer

Reflection upon the Quran is prescribed, as Allah, mighty and majestic, has explained. It is the purpose: the purpose of recitation is reflection, reasoning and understanding, followed by action. He, mighty and majestic, says: “A blessed Book that We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect on its verses and people of understanding may take heed” [Ṣād 38:29]. It was sent down for reflection. Allah Most High says: “Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” [Muḥammad 47:24].

What is prescribed for a believing man, and likewise a believing woman, when reciting is to reflect, reason and seek understanding. Its meaning is to understand the verse. Reflecting upon it means considering what is intended: to reason and understand what is intended by His words, “Establish prayer and give zakah” [al-Baqarah 2:43]; “Guard the prayers, especially the middle prayer” [al-Baqarah 2:238]; “So fear Allah as much as you are able” [al-Taghābun 64:16]; and “Establish prayer, give zakah, and obey the Messenger so that you may be shown mercy” [al-Nūr 24:56] … and other verses.

That is, he reflects on the meaning: what does it mean? He seeks to understand so that he can act upon it and advise people about it. The believer reflects and preserves what has become clear to him, even by writing it down, so that he can act upon it and advise his brothers about it, if he has knowledge and understanding. He acts upon it and advises his brothers and household about it. This is how a believer should give attention to the matter: when he reads the Quran, he reasons and reflects so that he benefits and acts. Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good and be good to you. Then a person who reflects upon the Quran and arrives at meanings should not keep them for his personal life, as this questioner puts it, but should share them with his brothers?

Answer: If he is able to preserve them and has clear understanding, let him share them. But if he is uncertain or lacks knowledge, he should ask the people of knowledge about them and present them to the people of knowledge, so that they give him insight and he understands what is intended and can also benefit others.

But if he is a student of knowledge who understands, he should advise his brothers and his household with what he has understood from Allah's Book and learned from the Quran, so that he is among those who call to guidance. Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good and be good to you.
