Original question
Some people use expressions that involve seeking help from jinn, calling upon the Prophet ﷺ and swearing by him. When corrected, they say, ‘My tongue has become accustomed to it.’ What is the ruling on this?
Answer
He must accustom his tongue to good speech and beware of objectionable speech. This is no excuse. He must guard his tongue against what Allah has forbidden. Appealing to jinn for rescue and calling upon them is associating partners with Allah, majestic and exalted. Allah says, ‘There were men among mankind who sought refuge with men among the jinn, so they increased them in distress’ [al-Jinn 72:6]. Many Arabs in their pre-Islamic ignorance worshipped jinn, sought refuge with them and feared them.
The believer must beware of this, trust Allah, rely upon Allah, and seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words, night and day, from the evil of what He has created. Allah will protect him from their evil. In his night and day, at any stopping place and in any location, he says, ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from the evil of what He has created’: ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from the evil of what He has created.’ He repeats it three times or more, regularly, morning and evening, and Allah saves him from their evil.
Likewise, saying, ‘In the name of Allah, with whose Name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,’ three times, morning and evening, is one of the means of protection from everything.
Likewise, reciting ‘Say: He is Allah, One’ and the two protective surahs, three times morning and evening, after Fajr and after Maghrib, is one of the means of safety from every evil.
The point is that he must guard his tongue against all the bad speech Allah has forbidden: calling upon jinn, swearing by other than Allah and other objectionable speech. Saying, ‘My tongue has become accustomed to it,’ is no excuse. Rather, he must beware and guard his tongue against what Allah has forbidden. The Prophet ﷺ says, ‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.’ Allah says in His magnificent Book, ‘He utters no word without a watcher present beside him’ [Qaf 50:18].
He is accountable for his speech, so he must guard his tongue against everything Allah has forbidden: backbiting, tale-bearing, insults, calling upon jinn, and seeking a means to Allah through created beings, such as through the Prophet, the Prophet’s standing or the Prophet’s right. None of this is permissible. Tawassul is through calling upon Allah, affirming His oneness, believing in Him, exalted is He, following the law, and seeking a means through your righteous deeds. All of that is good.
‘O Allah, I ask You by my faith in You, my love for You, my following Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, my dutifulness to my parents, my maintaining family ties and my fulfilling trusts.’ Seek a means through your deeds, like the people of the cave who sought a means to Allah through their righteous deeds. Allah saved them and relieved their distress. The Messenger ﷺ told of three men before our time whom nightfall and rain drove to a cave. They entered because of the rain and night, to spend the night there. Allah caused a rock to roll down from the top of the mountain until it blocked the cave, and they could not push it away. They said to one another, ‘Nothing will free you from this rock except supplicating to Allah through your righteous deeds.’ They sought a means to Allah through their righteous deeds, and Allah saved them from it.
One of them said, ‘O Allah, I had two elderly parents, and I used to give neither my family nor those in my service their evening drink before them.’
Ghabuq is milk at the beginning of the night. It was the custom of the desert people to pour the evening milk at night after milking the camels.
He used to bring the milk to give to his parents before his family. One night, the search for tree pasture took him far away and delayed him. He returned and found them asleep. He disliked waking them, so he remained standing with the cup, waiting for them to wake. The children were crying at his feet, wanting milk. Because of his great love and dutifulness to his parents, he remained standing until dawn. They woke, and he gave them the milk. Then he said, ‘O Allah, if You know that I did this seeking Your Face, relieve us of our predicament.’ The rock moved a little, but they could not get out.
The second then said, ‘O Allah, I had a female cousin who was among the people dearest to me. I tried to persuade her to yield herself to me’—that is, for unlawful intercourse—‘but she refused me.’ She was then afflicted by a severe year—that is, need—and came to him seeking help to meet her need. He said no, unless she allowed him access to herself; that is, permitted him to have unlawful intercourse with her. In her desperate need she agreed. When he sat between her legs, she said, ‘Servant of Allah, fear Allah and do not break the seal except by its lawful right.’ He had given her one hundred and twenty dinars. When she told him, ‘Fear Allah and do not break the seal except by its lawful right,’ he feared Allah, got up, left her and left the gold with her. He then said concerning this incident, ‘O Allah, if You know that I did this seeking Your Face’—meaning that he abandoned the unlawful intercourse and left the gold out of fear of You—‘relieve us of our predicament.’ The rock moved a little more, but they still could not get out.
The third then stood and said, ‘O Allah, I had hired workers. I paid them their due except one, whose wages remained with me. I increased and invested them in camels, cattle, sheep and slaves, and kept waiting for him to come and take what was his.’ He managed the property and traded with it, buying camels. What had remained owing to the worker was only some measures of barley, or sorghum, or rice. He increased this property and traded with it, buying camels, cattle, sheep and slaves. After some time, the worker came and said, ‘Servant of Allah, give me what was due to me, which I left with you.’ He said, ‘So-and-so, everything you see is yours: all the camels, cattle, sheep and slaves belong to you. I invested it for you.’ He replied, ‘Servant of Allah, do not mock me.’ He said, ‘I am not mocking you. It is yours, so take it.’ He drove all of it away—the camels, cattle, sheep and slaves. The man then said, ‘O Allah, if You know that I did this seeking Your Face, relieve us of our predicament.’ The rock moved away and they got out, through their righteous deeds by which they sought a means to Allah, mighty and exalted. Those deeds benefited them in hardship, and Allah saved them through them in hardship.
So seek a means to Allah through your faith, piety, dutifulness to your parents and fulfilment of people’s rights: that is a righteous means. Likewise, seeking a means through affirming Allah’s oneness, being sincere to Him and believing in Him are all righteous means.
Seek a means to Allah through your testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger, and through your belief in Allah and His Messenger and your belief in the Last Day. All of this is a lawful means, like saying, ‘O Allah, I ask You by Your Names and Attributes.’
As for seeking a means through created beings, the Prophet’s standing, the Prophet’s right, someone’s standing, someone’s head or someone’s honour: no. These are invalid means which should not be mentioned; they are not lawful means.
