Original question

He says: I want to memorize the Noble Quran, but I have been unable to because of life's demands. What guidance do you give?

Answer

Memorizing the Quran is not obligatory, but it is recommended. If you are able to memorize it, praise be to Allah; otherwise, there is no blame on you. There is no doubt that memorization is one of Allah's great blessings. If a believing man or woman is able to memorize the Quran, this is one of Allah's great blessings.

The purpose is reflection: you should read it frequently. If you are able to memorize it, that is a great blessing. Otherwise, read from the muṣḥaf with reflection and understanding, because the purpose for which it was revealed is to act upon it. Reading it with reflection and understanding is among the means of understanding it and acting upon it.

What is prescribed for everyone, men and women alike, is to give attention to the Quran, recite it frequently, reflect on its meanings, gain understanding of it, and act according to what it indicates by carrying out its commands and avoiding its prohibitions. We should take lessons from what Allah has related to us about earlier peoples, so that we avoid their evil deeds and do what brings our Lord's pleasure and our salvation in this world and the Hereafter. He, glorified is He, says: “A blessed Book that We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect on its verses and people of understanding may take heed” [Ṣād 38:29]. He says in His great Book: “Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” [Muḥammad 47:24]. He, majestic and exalted, says: “Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most upright” [al-Isrāʾ 17:9].

What is prescribed for every believing man and woman is to give attention to the Quran, recite it frequently with reflection, reasoning and understanding, consult works of tafsīr for benefit, ask the people of knowledge about anything unclear, and act.

The purpose is action: to obey your Lord, fulfil His obligations and avoid what He has forbidden, with insight and knowledge, desiring what is with Allah and fearing His punishment, glorified and exalted is He. For every letter you have a good deed, and a good deed is multiplied tenfold, as is authentically reported in a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He, peace and blessings be upon him, says: “Whoever reads a letter of the Quran has a good deed for it, and a good deed is multiplied tenfold.” It is one of Allah's great blessings that by reading His Book you gain this immense good—knowledge, action and these tremendous good deeds. Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
