Original question
Esteemed Shaykh, what is ilhad concerning Allah’s Names and Attributes?
Answer
Ilhad originally—in the Arabic language—means deviation or inclination. This is the sense in Allah’s statement: “The tongue of the one towards whom they incline is foreign, while this is a clear Arabic tongue” [al-Nahl 16:103]. The burial niche (lahd) is likewise named for its inclination towards one side of the grave. Ilhad can only be understood by understanding the straight course, because, as the saying goes, “Things become clear through their opposites.” The straight course concerning Allah’s Names and Attributes is to affirm these Names and Attributes according to their true meanings befitting Allah, Mighty and Majestic, without distortion, negation, specifying how, or likening them to those of creation. This accords with the principle followed by Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaah in this matter, as previously explained. Once the straight course in this matter is understood, deviation from it is ilhad. Scholars have identified several types of ilhad concerning Allah’s Names. What encompasses them is to say: it is deviating with them from what must be believed concerning them.
The first type is denying any of the Names or the Attributes they signify. An example is denying al-Rahman as one of Allah’s Names, as the people of the pre-Islamic period did. Another is affirming the Names while denying the Attributes they contain, as some innovators say: “Allah is merciful without mercy, hearing without hearing, and seeing without sight,” and so forth.
The second type is naming Allah with a name with which He has not named Himself. This is ilhad because Allah’s Names are determined by revelation. No one may name Allah with a name with which He has not named Himself. Doing so is speaking about Allah without knowledge and also transgressing against Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and His right. An example is what the philosophers did in naming the deity “the efficient cause,” or what the Christians did in naming Allah “the Father,” and similar names.
The third type is believing that these Names indicate attributes resembling the attributes of created beings, thereby making them signify likeness. This is ilhad because someone who believes Allah’s Names imply likening Allah to His creation has made Allah’s speech and His Messenger’s speech ﷺ indicate disbelief. Likening Allah to His creation is disbelief because it contradicts His statement: “There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” [al-Shura 42:11], and His statement: “Do you know of any equal to Him?” [Maryam 19:65]. Nuaym ibn Hammad al-Khuzai, the teacher of al-Bukhari—may Allah have mercy on them both—said: “Whoever likens Allah to His creation has disbelieved; whoever denies what Allah has described Himself with has disbelieved. There is no likening in what Allah has named and described Himself with.”
The fourth type is deriving names for idols from Allah’s Names, such as deriving al-Lat from al-Ilah, al-Uzza from al-Aziz, and Manat from al-Mannan. This is ilhad because Allah’s Names belong exclusively to Him. The meanings signified by these Names may not be transferred to a created being so that it is given worship that only Allah, Mighty and Majestic, deserves. These are the types of ilhad concerning Allah’s Names.
