Original question

Sister ʿ. ʿ. from Madinah says in her question that, when entering the bathroom, she recites the reported supplication: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from al-khubth and al-khabāʾith.’ She asks: In the word al-khubth, is the letter bāʾ unvowelled, or does it take a ḍammah [al-khubuth], or is either acceptable? Please explain, may Allah reward you. What does this supplication mean? Is it said outside the bathroom or inside it? If someone forgets to say it outside, does he say it inside? Must it be spoken aloud inside the bathroom? What does one say on leaving? Is the supplication said merely on entering the bathroom, or when one intends to relieve oneself?

Answer

It is established that, when the Prophet ﷺ intended to enter the place for relieving oneself, he said: ‘I seek refuge in Allah from al-khubth and al-khabāʾith.’ The bāʾ in al-khubth may take a ḍammah or a sukūn; either is acceptable. What is meant is seeking protection from evil and evil deeds. Some scholars explained it as male and female devils. If one is in open country, one says this prayer for protection when intending to relieve oneself. This prayer for protection is said before entering the toilet, not afterwards.

After leaving the place where he relieved himself, it is prescribed for him to say, ‘Ghufrānak’—‘I ask Your forgiveness.’ Likewise, if he finishes relieving himself in open country, whether urinating or defecating, it is recommended that he say, ‘I ask Your forgiveness.’

The wisdom in this—and Allah knows best—is that Allah, glorified is He, has blessed him with the food and drink He made available to him, then blessed him with the discharge of waste. A servant falls short in giving thanks. So, when the waste is removed following the blessing of food and drink, he is instructed to seek Allah's forgiveness. Allah, glorified is He, loves His servants to thank Him for His blessings and seek His forgiveness for their sins, as He says: ‘So remember Me; I will remember you. Give thanks to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me’ [al-Baqarah 2:152].
