Original question
The final letter in this episode is from the listener and contract worker Muḥammad Kamāl Muḥammad from the Arab Republic of Egypt. He asks: What is the amount of zakah for an individual person, and when is it due? I think by “person” he may mean fiṭrah, or zakāt al-fiṭr.
Answer
If the question means zakāt al-fiṭr at the end of Ramadan, its amount is one ṣāʿ of any staple food: a ṣāʿ of wheat, barley, dates, or the local staple. A ṣāʿ is four full double-handfuls using two average-sized hands. That is the ṣāʿ: four mudds. A mudd is one full double-handful, and four make a ṣāʿ. By weight, a ṣāʿ is four hundred and eighty mithqāls, and a mudd is one hundred and twenty mithqāls.
The point is that the zakah is one ṣāʿ of the local staple. This is how the Prophet ﷺ commanded people to give charity: a ṣāʿ of dates or a ṣāʿ of barley, and so on. The Prophet ﷺ made zakāt al-fiṭr obligatory upon people as a ṣāʿ of dates or a ṣāʿ of barley, and so on. The Companions likewise gave a ṣāʿ of dates, barley, wheat, raisins or food. This is what is obligatory for people, young and old, male and female, whether it is wheat or another staple.
Some scholars said that half a ṣāʿ of wheat suffices, but that is the less preferred view. The correct view is that a full ṣāʿ is required of any of the country's staple foods. Yes.
