Original question

The second question in the letter from the pilgrim Fāḍil Muḥammad Ikrām of the Republic of Turkey says: I would like to know the ruling on uḍḥiyah. Is it obligatory for a pilgrim? Some scholars told me that it is not prescribed for the pilgrim, but for others, because the pilgrim does not have the Eid al-Aḍḥā prayer, and uḍḥiyah is what is slaughtered on the Day of Sacrifice after the Eid prayer. Please advise us; may Allah benefit you. Does someone who leaves it incur sin?

Answer

Uḍḥiyah is a Sunnah—an emphasized Sunnah. On Eid day, the Prophet ﷺ used to sacrifice two white rams with black markings: one on behalf of Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, and the other on behalf of Muḥammad's community, peace and blessings be upon him. Uḍḥiyah is therefore an emphasized Sunnah for someone who can afford and perform it. Some scholars held it obligatory when one has the means and ability. The apparent purport of the authentic hadiths is that it is a Sunnah for pilgrims and others. It is established that he ﷺ sacrificed two rams during the Farewell Pilgrimage in addition to slaughtering the sacrificial camels. He, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtered a hundred camels during the Farewell Pilgrimage and sacrificed two white rams with black markings. It is thus a Sunnah. If a person sacrifices one animal on behalf of himself and his household, that suffices, praise be to Allah. As for hady offerings, these are slaughtered on account of entering iḥrām for Hajj and ʿUmrah. Such an offering is called hady or dam, meaning a sacrifice required in Hajj or ʿUmrah. These sacrifices have detailed rulings. Allah, majestic and exalted, says: “Whoever performs ʿUmrah followed by Hajj must offer whatever sacrificial animal is easy to obtain” [al-Baqarah 2:196].

If someone enters iḥrām for ʿUmrah and Hajj together on coming to Makkah, or enters iḥrām for ʿUmrah, completes it by performing ṭawāf and saʿy, shortening his hair and leaving iḥrām, then enters iḥrām for Hajj, he owes a hady. Some people may call it uḍḥiyah, but the recognized religious term is hady. He must slaughter it during the days of sacrifice: Eid day and the days of Tashrīq. It consists of one-seventh of a camel, one-seventh of a cow, or one animal from the sheep-and-goat category: a goat of the thanī age or a sheep of the jadhaʿ age. This is called the hady of tamattuʿ or qirān. But if he enters iḥrām for Hajj alone, comes from his country with Hajj alone and no ʿUmrah, recites the talbiyah for Hajj, and remains in iḥrām until he stands at ʿArafah, stones the pillars, and performs ṭawāf and saʿy, he owes no sacrifice, because he is performing Hajj alone. The sacrifice is required of someone who combines ʿUmrah with Hajj. Nor does he owe an uḍḥiyah: uḍḥiyah is a Sunnah, not obligatory. If he offers it in Minā or Makkah, that is a Sunnah. But the specific sacrificial offering of someone performing tamattuʿ or combining the two in qirān is obligatory and is called hady. What is slaughtered voluntarily in Minā is also called hady. What is slaughtered on Eid al-Aḍḥā in towns, villages and desert settlements is called uḍḥiyah: one sheep or goat on behalf of a man and his household. If he offers one-seventh of a camel or cow, that suffices, praise be to Allah.

Yes.
