Original question

What is the ruling on maintaining ties of kinship?

Answer

It is obligatory. The Prophet ﷺ says: “Whoever would like his provision to be expanded and his lifespan to be extended should maintain his ties of kinship.” In another authentic hadith concerning kinship, he reports: “Whoever maintains it, I maintain a bond with him; whoever severs it, I cut him off.” Allah says: “Would you, if you turned away, spread corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, making them deaf and blinding their sight” [Muḥammad 47:22–23]. Another hadith says: “One who severs ties of kinship will not enter Paradise.”
