Original question

I love you for Allah's sake with a love known only to Allah, mighty and majestic. What is the ruling on seeking knowledge?

Answer

First: may Allah, for whose sake you have loved us, love you. The Prophet ﷺ says in an authentic hadith: “There are seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on the day when there is no shade except His: a just ruler; a young person who grew up worshipping Allah; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two people who love one another for Allah's sake, meeting and parting upon that; a man whom a woman of status and beauty invites, but he says, ‘I fear Allah’; a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives; and a man who remembers Allah while alone”—meaning that no one is with him—“and his eyes overflow,” meaning that he weeps out of fear of Allah. Its authenticity is agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.

This great and noble hadith indicates that among the seven whom Allah will shade in His shade are those who love one another for Allah's sake. Those who love one another for Allah's sake, of any kind, in any country, place or age, are included in this great hadith.

He ﷺ says in another hadith: “Allah, mighty and majestic, will say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Where are those who love one another for My majesty? Today I will shade them in My shade, on the day when there is no shade except My shade.’” We ask Allah to make us and you among them.

As for seeking knowledge, the student of knowledge must be eager to seek knowledge, gain understanding of the religion, and strive to know Allah's rulings. You must know what Allah has made obligatory upon you and what He has forbidden you. This is obligatory. Every person must learn what he cannot be excused for not knowing of what Allah has made obligatory upon him and forbidden him. As for broadening one's knowledge and learning the rulings of the Sharia, this is a communal obligation, as established among the scholars. If a sufficient number undertake a communal obligation, the duty falls away from the rest. But where are the sufficient numbers today? Where are they?

Anyone whom Allah has enabled to devote himself to seeking knowledge must give this matter attention, continue, and pursue it from university through specialization. This brings more complete knowledge and greater acceptance of one's call. The higher a person's qualification, the more likely people are to be influenced by his call, if his intention is sincere for Allah. It also provides greater assurance through increased knowledge and insight. Whoever Allah has enabled to seek knowledge should be glad and rejoice in this, as Allah, glorified is He, says: “Say: In the bounty of Allah and His mercy—in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate” [Yūnus 10:58].

There is no doubt that it is Allah's bounty that He has made seeking knowledge easy for you and chosen you for it, and His mercy towards you that He has provided someone from Ahl al-Sunnah to teach you. Rejoice in this, praise Allah for it, continue seeking, be patient and persevere, and safeguard your time. Safeguard the time devoted to lessons, giving them attention and considering them before coming to the teacher; to reading at home and with your fellow students; to the Quran, giving it attention, reciting it frequently and memorizing what you can; and to putting knowledge into practice. Acting upon knowledge assists learning and is a cause of success. If you are eager to act upon what you learn and to observe voluntary prayers and the various voluntary acts of worship, this is among the greatest means for Allah to grant you success.
