Original question
His other question is: Someone lends money to people at interest. For example, he gives a man one hundred dinars for six months and takes an additional twenty dinars on that amount. What is Islam's ruling on this?
Answer
This transaction is ribā, one of the practices of ribā. Its ruling is that it is an invalid, usurious transaction. Allah, majestic and exalted, prohibited ribā, and His Messenger ﷺ cursed the one who consumes it, the one who pays it, its recorder and its two witnesses, saying, “They are alike.” Allah, glorified is He, says: “O you who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of ribā” [al-Baqarah 2:278]. The meaning is that ribā must be abandoned. He, glorified and exalted is He, then explained that it is war against Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
The believer must beware of all kinds of ribā. Thus He says: “If you do not, then be informed of war from Allah and His Messenger” [al-Baqarah 2:279]. That is, know of war from Allah and His Messenger, and that through engaging in ribā you are at war with Allah and His Messenger. Interest on loans is ribā. If he lends someone ten dinars on the condition that he later returns twelve or thirteen, this is ribā. Yes.
